Mixed reality brings together both the real and virtual worlds, creating a new hybrid experience that changes the way we occupy and interact with the world around us. As technology progresses, new and exciting ways of utilizing mixed reality come to the surface. The design world has begun to take advantage of this new medium as a means of both concept design as well as augmenting the construction process. This independent study explored the use of Mixed Reality headsets to aid in the design and fabrication of a wooden pavilion that was placed at UVA’s School of Architecture. 10 students, both undergraduate and graduate level, along with 2 mentors, Melissa Goldman and Trevor Kemp (Fabrication Lab Managers), worked on this semester-long project to collect, mill and process lumber provided by UVA Sawmilling to build this installation by means of Mixed Reality headsets and parametric design.
