UVA Sawmilling creates and develops transformative educational opportunities for students to engage in meaningful community-based practices. We are building a network of cross-disciplinary experts and experiences that situate global context with practical skill; aligning research goals to further increase research surrounding sustainability, design, and education.

METHODS

Our research agenda is meant to empower other researchers and community members to not only strategically develop key resources platforms, but also to improve and understand these practices through research. We are researching efforts in urban wood material lifecycles and urban tree canopies, utilizing resources from local heritage trees to traditional timber framing, hand tools to advanced 3D modeling software.

The inclusion of undergraduate and graduate student efforts provides opportunities to engage in high-level research methodologies, with significant career opportunity development. Our research inherently builds capacity and empathy for this network, developing sustainable pipelines that will continue to build a body of research and bolster existing research in these aforementioned areas.
