UVA Sawmilling/ Build is a portion of our group that seeks to share the practical skills of hands-on building techniques. Our team prides itself on not only providing quality material, but the means to construct and work with it. Our collaboration with makerspaces on Grounds gives us and the UVA community the support needed to pass on this knowledge to anyone interested in getting their hands dirty!

WORK

Our work at UVA Sawmilling takes on a number of different forms. We collaborate with the community of UVA to provide the skills and material required for their latest build. The possibilities are endless, whether it is a picnic table for the School of Architecture, a produce bench for Morven Kitchen Gardens, or even a table to display your latest artwork.

The Grounds at UVA are constantly changing with new buildings and additions popping up all around. Our recent collaboration between UVA Sawmilling and Facilities Management sees this material back into the buildings. Our hope is to find at least one feature within every building came from a fallen tree on Grounds. So far, we have provided outdoor classroom tables for the School of Architecture, benches in the new student health building and material on the dock just waiting to find its new home. Keep an eye out for these new additions!

WHERE DO WE WORK?

  • The FabLab at the School of architecture is a makerspace on Grounds that has a wide variety of woodworking tools and a fully equipped woodshop to help make most any builds possible!

  • The home base for our project, O’Hill is the log site where Facilities Management drops the logs from fallen trees. Here we work with local sawyers to mill and dry material for the UVA community.

WHAT DO WE BUILD?

  • We get a numeber of requests from students across UVA to help them realize their latest builds. This could be for coursework, research or student organizations! If you have a build, reach out and we can work to make it happen!

  • The University has a number of build projects in progress and we are working alongside the architects and construction teams to get the trees back into the buildings. This could happen at any scale, tables benches, wall panels or even artwork.

  • We know materials can be quite expensive and we can provide an alternative. We want to work with faculty to offset these costs of material for any research or coursework that may be required. With enough notice, our team hope to field these requests so your work can be at its best.

HOW TO GET INVOLVED!

  • Group build days are an opportunity for you to get hands-on experience building with our team. These builds vary and can typically be done in a short period but are open to anyone excited and willing to pick up some tools and get their hands dirty.

  • Some of our bigger events are Milling Days, where we have local sawyers come and mill logs into useable material. This event gives you the opportunity to see how to process a log first-hand and understand what goes into making quality material for any build.

  • Our mission is to share our initiative with the greater Charlottesville Community. Working alongside community members, we will have opportunities to build with a number of different organizations to fill their needs.
