Part of something new

The School of Data Science is one of the first of its kind across the country and features powerful and outstanding design elements within. The board table that fills the large conference room on the SE corner of the ground floor needed to be equally as incredible. Working together, we honed a design that would fit a monstrous oak log’s slabs into the 25’ x 6’ asked-for table. The table is made entirely from the wood of that impressive log.

Willow Oak, Gilmer Hall || 2.5”x210”x Varying Widths
Though only 75 years old, one of the Willow Oaks growing on the North East corner of Gilmer Hall had an impressive trunk and crown, providing immense shade to the pedestrians below. As McCormick Road was set for expansion, Amy Eichenberger, who managed the project, reached out to UVA Sawmilling with a specific note about this tree. We were able to go and assess it, while standing, and ask for particular logs to be cut to provide the best case scenario for future use. The arborists delivered on some excellent logs, which were then useful when Ted Nelson, PM for the School of Data Science interior woodwork, etc., came calling. Gochenour Sawmilling Company and Shenandoah Planing Mill put their heads together on how to get the best material from the log and dry and prepare it as best as possible. Architectural Wood then stepped in to fabricate the massive table, stitching together 6 of the slabs into a two-piece top, with a full wooden base below.
